Does Pine Bark Extract Improve Cognitive Performance? The Evidence
Pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) contains proanthocyanidins. The same polyphenols in grape seeds and cocoa. Eight RCTs have tested its cognitive effects. The results are real, but conditional.
How It Works
Two mechanisms. Both cross the blood-brain barrier.
More blood flow. A 2007 study gave 16 men 180mg/day for two weeks. Blood flow increased 41%. When researchers blocked nitric oxide production, the effect vanished. The pathway is NO-mediated vasodilation.
Less oxidative stress. A 12-week trial of 60 professionals found 30% reduction in plasma free radicals versus controls.
What the Trials Show
Benefits are strongest in people with elevated oxidative stress or age-related decline.
Elderly (60-85): 3-month trial, 101 participants, 150mg/day. Working memory improved. Attention and psychomotor speed did not.
Professionals (35-55): 12-week trial, 60 participants. Small but significant gains on PASAT, pattern recognition, spatial working memory.
Students: 8-week trial, 100mg/day. Better attention, memory, executive function. Higher exam scores than controls.
Children with ADHD: 4-week RCT, 61 kids, 1mg/kg/day. Reduced hyperactivity and inattention. Symptoms returned one month after stopping.
Limitations
Sample sizes are small (60-100). Effect sizes are described qualitatively, not quantified. Most studies come from the same research groups. No meta-analysis exists for cognitive outcomes specifically.
The mechanism doesn't explain why working memory improves but psychomotor speed doesn't.
